Last weekend, or to be more exact on Friday 5th, we celebrated the Bonfire / Guy Fawkes Night in Leeds with several other language assistants from France, Spain, Paraguay and Germany. The whole thing is based on Guy Fawkes and his gunpowder plot. On November 5 in 1605, nice chap Guy and his fellow mates tried to blow up the British Parliament and the Royal Family with the help of a lot of gunpowder, because they didn’t like the British King James I, as he was a Protestant and a Scot (bad thing at the time).
Unfortunately (?) the gang was betrayed and Guy, who had to look after the barrels of gunpower, was discovered on November 4 and arrested. Therefore, the big ‚firework‘ didn’t take place and Guy as well as his fellow mates were executed later on. As a remembrance of the whole thing and as a compensation for the missed fire / firework in 1605, everywhere in Britain there are fires and fireworks lit in the parcs on November 5. For the British, these fireworks are even more important than the ones at New Year’s Eve. If anyone should be interested in finding out more about Guy Fawkes and his gunpowder plot, I recommend this video which is an ironic documentation of the story produced by BBC.

Schade.
das stimmt wohl…
